Your Role 

Are you interested in making a difference while using your trade skills? The Army Reserve has a variety of Trade roles where you can experience adventure outside of your everyday. 


As a soldier in the Army Reserve, you’ll perform military duties and put your skills and qualifications to work in range of different environments. You’ll apply your trade skills on Army bases as well as out in the field on exercises and deployments around Australia and overseas.

Browse from the following Trade roles where you can work in a hands-on role and participate in military duties: 

  • Build, maintain and repair a range of Army facilities and support local communities as a Carpenter 

  • Keep the Army’s electrical, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in peak working order as an Electrical Technician 

  • Power the Army’s buildings and battle management systems as an Electrician 

  • Help keep Army vehicles and equipment mission ready as a Metalsmith 

  • Bring your plumbing skills to the Army Reserve as a Plumber.

Boost your Income 

On completion of your initial military and employment training, you could earn at least $236/day tax-free.  

Additional amounts are paid for time spent on exercises and deployments. 


Eligibility:  
For this role, you must: 

  • Be at least 17 at the time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen, and have completed an Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English and Mathematics 

  • If you are not an Australian Citizen you may still be eligible to join the ADF if you meet certain criteria, please visit the ADF Careers Eligibility Page for more details 

  • Be reasonably fit and healthy. Keeping fit is a big part of joining the ADF. You’ll need to pass a physical fitness test before you join, but don’t worry, we'll give you tips to help you prepare 

  • Be able to successfully obtain a security clearance 

For the specific roles, you must: 

  • Carpenter: Be a qualified Carpenter. The minimum standard for entry is a Certificate III in Carpentry and demonstrated current work experience 

  • Electrical Technician: Be a qualified Electrical Technician having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution, as well the full-time employment requirement for that trade 

  • Electrician: Be a qualified Electrician, having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised Australian institution, as well as the full-time employment requirement for that trade 

  • Metalsmith: Be a qualified Welder 1st Class, Boilermaker Marker Off, Boilermaker Welder or Sheet Metal Worker having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution as well as the full-time employment requirement for that trade 

  • Plumber: Be a qualified Plumber, having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution, as well as the full-time employment requirement for that trade.
